Preparing for Your Session

Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing in natural fabrics if possible. Cotton or linen allows your body to breathe and moves easily as you settle on the treatment table. Avoid tight waistbands, restrictive jewellery, or synthetic materials that might feel uncomfortable during the 45-90 minute session.

Eat lightly beforehand—a heavy meal can make lying still uncomfortable, whilst arriving hungry may leave you distracted. Many practitioners suggest avoiding alcohol or recreational substances for 24 hours prior, as these may interfere with your sensitivity to subtle energy shifts.

Arrive with an open mind but realistic expectations. Energy healing operates within its own framework of understanding, quite different from conventional medical treatment. Some people feel dramatic shifts; others notice subtle changes that unfold over days or weeks.

What Happens During the Session

Your practitioner will begin with a brief conversation about your current concerns and what you're hoping to address. They'll explain their particular approach—whether Reiki, Pranic Healing, or another energy modality—and answer any questions about the process ahead.

You'll lie fully clothed on a massage table, usually face up initially. The practitioner may dim the lights and play soft background music to create a calming atmosphere. They'll often begin by placing their hands gently on or slightly above your head, then work systematically through different areas of your body.

The actual hand positions vary by technique. Some practitioners maintain light contact with specific points; others hold their hands several inches above your body. You might notice their hands becoming warm or feel tingling sensations. The practitioner may spend longer in certain areas where they sense energy blockages or imbalances.

Most of the session involves this quiet, meditative process. The practitioner remains focused and present, whilst you're encouraged simply to relax and notice whatever arises. Sessions typically conclude with a few minutes of integration time before you slowly sit up.

What You Might Experience

Physical sensations during energy healing vary enormously. Some people feel warmth spreading through their body, gentle tingling, or waves of relaxation. Others notice areas becoming temporarily cooler, or experience subtle pulsing sensations. You might feel as though you're floating or sinking deeper into the table.

Emotional responses can be equally varied. Many people slip into a deeply peaceful state, similar to the edge of sleep. Some experience vivid imagery, memories surfacing, or unexpected emotions arising—anything from joy to sadness. These responses are considered normal within energy healing traditions.

Don't worry if you feel very little during your first session. Sensitivity to energy work often develops over time, and a quiet session doesn't indicate lack of effectiveness within this practice's framework.

In the hours following treatment, you might feel unusually relaxed, energised, or emotionally sensitive. Some people report sleeping more deeply that night, whilst others feel temporarily unsettled as they process the session. Mild fatigue or emotional fluctuations are also common as your system integrates the experience.

Aftercare and Integration

Drink plenty of water following your session—most practitioners emphasise this strongly. Whether this serves a physiological purpose or simply supports the ritual of self-care, staying well-hydrated seems to help people feel more comfortable post-treatment.

Avoid making major decisions or engaging in intense activities for the remainder of the day if possible. Many people benefit from gentle movement like walking, light stretching, or taking a warm bath. Pay attention to your dreams that night, as some traditions view these as part of the integration process.

Changes attributed to energy healing may be immediate or gradual. Some people report feeling different straight away—more relaxed, emotionally clearer, or physically lighter. Others notice subtle shifts over the following days or weeks. Keep a simple journal noting your sleep quality, mood, and physical sensations to track patterns over time.

Building a Treatment Course

Most energy healing practitioners suggest beginning with three to six sessions spaced one to two weeks apart. This allows time to gauge your individual response whilst maintaining momentum within the practice's framework.

The frequency and duration depend largely on what you're seeking from the experience. Someone exploring energy work for general wellness might have monthly sessions, whilst others addressing specific concerns may initially meet weekly. Listen to your own sense of what feels right rather than adhering rigidly to any prescribed schedule.

After your initial course, many people settle into maintenance sessions every 4-8 weeks, treating energy healing as part of their broader wellness routine. The practice tends to be cumulative—practitioners often observe that people become more sensitive to energy work over time, reporting subtler but more meaningful experiences.
