Preparing for Your Session

Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows you to sit naturally for 60-90 minutes. Many practitioners prefer you avoid heavy meals for two hours beforehand, as digestive energy can interfere with subtle awareness. Skip caffeine if you're sensitive—you want to feel grounded but not overstimulated.

Bring a notebook and pen. Insights often emerge quickly, and writing them down prevents valuable observations from slipping away. Some people find it helpful to prepare 2-3 specific questions or areas they'd like to explore, though sessions often develop their own organic direction.

Avoid scheduling intense commitments immediately afterwards. Plan for quiet time to process whatever emerges. If you're currently in crisis or experiencing severe anxiety, depression, or other mental health symptoms, speak with your GP first—intuitive counselling complements but doesn't replace clinical mental health support.

The Session Unfolds

Your practitioner will likely begin with 10-15 minutes of conversation, establishing what brings you to the session and creating a comfortable atmosphere. The room is typically softly lit with minimal distractions—comfortable seating, perhaps gentle background music or complete silence.

The intuitive portion usually begins with the counsellor taking a few moments of quiet focus, often with eyes closed, tuning into their sense of you energetically or emotionally. This isn't dramatic—it resembles thoughtful concentration rather than theatrical performance. Some practitioners work with their eyes open, maintaining gentle eye contact throughout.

Insights emerge as impressions, images, physical sensations in the counsellor's body, or sudden knowing about patterns or dynamics in your life. They'll share these observations as they arise: "I'm sensing some tension around a decision you're facing" or "There's something about feeling stuck between two different versions of yourself." You'll explore these together, with you confirming, clarifying, or redirecting based on your own experience.

The final 15-20 minutes typically focus on integration—discussing how insights connect to practical decisions or emotional healing. Sessions last 75-90 minutes total.

What You Might Experience

During the session, many people report feeling deeply heard and understood in unexpected ways. You might experience moments of recognition—"Yes, that's exactly it"—when the practitioner articulates something you've felt but couldn't express. Some people feel emotional release as blocked feelings surface and are witnessed.

Physically, you might notice relaxation as tension releases, or conversely, temporary restlessness as suppressed emotions begin moving. Some people feel energised; others feel peaceful and slightly drowsy. These responses vary significantly between individuals and sessions.

After the session, expect a period of continued processing. Insights often deepen over the following days as you notice patterns or connections that weren't immediately apparent. Some people experience vivid dreams or heightened emotional sensitivity for 24-48 hours. Others feel immediate clarity and motivation toward specific changes.

Aftercare and Integration

Spend the remainder of your session day quietly if possible. Avoid making major decisions immediately—insights need time to settle before translating into action. Drink plenty of water and eat nourishing food, as emotional processing can be surprisingly depleting.

Review your notes within 24 hours whilst memories remain fresh. Consider which insights resonated most strongly and what practical steps they suggest. Many people find journalling helpful for processing emerging thoughts and feelings.

Avoid alcohol or other substances that evening, as they can interfere with the natural integration process. Some practitioners recommend gentle activities like walking in nature, meditation, or creative expression to support ongoing insight development.

Building on Your Experience

Most people benefit from 3-6 sessions spaced 2-3 weeks apart, allowing time for insights to integrate between meetings. Single sessions can provide valuable clarity, but deeper patterns often require several explorations from different angles.

Initial sessions typically focus on immediate concerns or questions you bring. Subsequent sessions might explore themes that emerged previously, track how insights have influenced your life, or delve into deeper emotional or spiritual patterns. Some people return periodically during life transitions; others work intensively over several months before taking breaks.

Progress unfolds differently for everyone. Some people experience immediate clarity and direction changes. Others notice gradual shifts in self-understanding or relationship dynamics over weeks or months. The collaborative nature means your openness to exploration and willingness to sit with uncertainty significantly influences outcomes.
