Preparing for Your Appointment
Arrive well-hydrated — drink plenty of water throughout the day before your session, as proper hydration supports lymphatic flow. Eat a light meal rather than arriving hungry or overly full, as the gentle treatment works best when your body feels comfortable.
Wear loose, comfortable clothing that's easy to remove. Many practitioners work with you in underwear, though some techniques can be performed through light clothing. Bring a water bottle for after your session. Avoid alcohol for 24 hours beforehand, as it can interfere with your body's natural drainage processes.
If you're menstruating, don't worry — lymphatic massage is perfectly safe during your cycle, though some women find they feel more sensitive to the gentle pressure.
During Your Lymphatic Massage Session
Your practitioner will begin with a brief consultation about your health history and what you hope to achieve. They'll explain that lymphatic massage feels very different from traditional massage — the pressure is remarkably light, often compared to the weight of a five-pence coin on your skin.
You'll lie on a comfortable massage table in a warm, quiet room. The session typically starts at your neck, where major lymph nodes cluster, before moving systematically across your body. The practitioner uses gentle, rhythmic movements that pump and stretch the skin, following the natural pathways of your lymphatic system.
Each area receives attention for several minutes. The movements are slow and deliberate — you'll feel gentle stretching and releasing of the skin rather than the deeper pressure of Swedish massage. Many people find the rhythm surprisingly soothing. Sessions typically last 60-90 minutes, with medical lymphatic drainage sometimes extending longer.
What You Might Feel During and After
During treatment, you'll likely feel deeply relaxed. The gentle, rhythmic movements often trigger the parasympathetic nervous system, leading to slower breathing and a sense of calm. Some people notice a subtle tingling sensation or feeling of warmth as circulation improves.
Immediately after your session, you might feel lighter or less puffy, though effects vary significantly between individuals. Some people notice reduced swelling within hours, whilst others require several sessions before seeing changes. You may feel mildly tired — this is normal and indicates your body is processing the treatment.
In the following days, you might notice improved sleep, reduced stiffness, or a general sense of wellbeing. If you're managing medical conditions like lymphoedema, improvements in swelling and comfort may develop gradually over multiple sessions.
Essential Aftercare
Drink plenty of water over the next 24 hours to support your lymphatic system's enhanced drainage. Aim for at least 8 glasses, more if you normally don't drink enough fluids.
Avoid strenuous exercise immediately after treatment, but gentle movement like walking actively supports lymphatic flow. If possible, elevate your legs for 15-20 minutes during the evening to encourage continued drainage.
Skip alcohol, excessive salt, and processed foods for 24 hours, as these can interfere with the detoxification process your lymphatic system is now better equipped to handle. Some practitioners recommend dry skin brushing between sessions to maintain momentum.
Building Your Treatment Programme
For general wellness, many people benefit from monthly sessions or seasonal treatments. If you're managing medical conditions, your practitioner will likely recommend a more intensive schedule — perhaps weekly sessions for 4-6 weeks, then maintenance treatments every 2-4 weeks.
Post-surgical lymphatic drainage often requires the most frequent sessions, sometimes 2-3 times weekly initially. Your practitioner should tailor the frequency to your specific needs and response to treatment.
Keep a simple log of how you feel after each session — noting energy levels, sleep quality, and any changes in swelling or discomfort. This helps both you and your practitioner assess whether the treatment frequency is optimal for your individual response.
