Preparing for Your Session
Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that won't restrict your breathing or circulation during extended periods of lying down. Avoid caffeine for several hours beforehand, as it can interfere with the relaxed state practitioners aim to create. Similarly, skip alcohol for 24 hours prior - you want your mind clear and receptive.
Bring water and perhaps a light snack for afterwards, as some people feel emotionally or physically drained following deep exploration work. Consider keeping a journal handy - many practitioners suggest writing down impressions immediately after the session whilst they're still vivid.
Arrive with an open but realistic mindset. Some people experience elaborate narratives and detailed imagery, whilst others receive subtle impressions or symbolic representations. Neither experience is more "correct" or meaningful than the other within this practice framework.
The Session Process
Sessions typically begin with 15-20 minutes of discussion about what you're seeking to explore - recurring fears, relationship patterns, or unexplained attractions or aversions. Your practitioner will explain their approach and answer questions about the process ahead.
The main exploration phase lasts 60-90 minutes. You'll lie comfortably on a couch or reclining chair whilst the practitioner guides you through progressive relaxation techniques. They'll use verbal cues to help you access a deeply relaxed state, similar to meditation or hypnosis. This isn't sleep - you remain aware and can speak throughout.
Once relaxed, the practitioner guides you to explore images, sensations, or impressions that arise. They might ask questions about what you're experiencing: "What do you see around you?" or "How does your body feel?" The goal is to allow whatever emerges to unfold naturally rather than forcing specific outcomes.
The session concludes with a gradual return to normal awareness, followed by 10-15 minutes discussing what you experienced and its potential relevance to your current concerns.
What You Might Experience
Experiences vary enormously between individuals and sessions. Some people report vivid, film-like sequences with specific historical details, emotional relationships, and dramatic events. Others experience more abstract impressions - colours, emotions, physical sensations, or symbolic imagery that feels meaningful without literal narrative content.
During the session, you might feel physical sensations like warmth, tingling, or heaviness in certain body parts. Emotional responses can be intense - sudden sadness, joy, fear, or love that seems connected to the emerging material. These feelings typically feel "borrowed" rather than personally overwhelming.
Afterwards, many people report feeling emotionally tender or unusually tired, similar to how you might feel after intensive therapy or meditation. Some experience vivid dreams over the following nights, or find certain emotions or memories continuing to surface for several days. Others feel energised and experience shifts in long-standing patterns relatively quickly.
Post-Session Care
Plan for a gentle evening following your session. Avoid making major decisions or engaging in emotionally demanding activities for the rest of the day. Many practitioners recommend spending time in nature, gentle movement like walking, or other nurturing activities that help you integrate the experience.
Record your impressions within 24 hours, even if they seemed unclear during the session. Details often become more meaningful upon reflection, and patterns may emerge when you review notes from multiple sessions. Some people find drawing or creative expression helpful for processing non-verbal aspects of their experience.
Avoid analysing or judging your experience too quickly. Within past life work frameworks, the value often lies in the metaphorical or emotional insights rather than historical accuracy. Give yourself several days to notice any subtle shifts in perspective, emotional responses, or behavioural patterns before deciding what the experience means to you.
Course of Sessions
Most practitioners recommend beginning with three sessions spaced 2-3 weeks apart. This allows time to integrate each experience whilst maintaining momentum for deeper exploration. Initial sessions often bring up broad themes or introductory material, with subsequent sessions providing more detailed or nuanced exploration.
Some people find significant insight or resolution within 3-4 sessions, whilst others continue working over months or years, returning periodically when new life challenges arise. There's no standard course length - the work tends to unfold according to individual needs and the complexity of themes being explored.
Practitioners often suggest taking breaks between intensive periods of past life work. This allows time to implement any insights gained and prevents the material from becoming overwhelming or disconnected from your current life circumstances.
