Preparing for Your Session
Arrive wearing comfortable, loose-fitting clothes that you can easily remove from the waist up. You'll keep your lower garments on throughout the session. Many practitioners provide towels or disposable undergarments for modesty.
Eat lightly beforehand — a heavy meal can make lying face down uncomfortable for the extended period required. Avoid alcohol for 24 hours prior, as the St John's Wort oil may interact with your system's processing of it.
Your practitioner will likely ask about your spinal history, current symptoms, and any medications you're taking. St John's Wort can interact with certain drugs, particularly antidepressants and blood thinners, so be thorough in your disclosure.
The Treatment Unfolds
You'll lie face down on a massage table, with your arms relaxed at your sides or in a comfortable position. The room is typically kept warm and quiet, often with soft music playing. Your practitioner begins by gently palpating your spine to assess its condition and identify areas of particular tension.
The distinctive golden St John's Wort oil is then applied generously along the entire length of your spine, from the base of your skull to your tailbone. The oil feels slightly warm and has an earthy, herbal scent that many find deeply relaxing.
Using primarily the edge of their hands, thumbs, and fingertips, your practitioner performs slow, sustained strokes along your spinal column. These aren't the firm, kneading movements of Swedish massage, but rather gentle, flowing motions that seem to stretch and decompress each vertebra. Each stroke can last 30-60 seconds, creating a meditative rhythm.
The most distinctive aspect comes when your practitioner applies gentle longitudinal traction — essentially a sustained stretch along your entire spine using their body weight channelled through their hands. You might feel a subtle sense of lengthening, as if someone were gently pulling you taller. This phase typically lasts 10-15 minutes and can feel profoundly relaxing.
What You Might Experience
During the session, most people report a deep sense of relaxation and warmth spreading through their back. The slow pace can feel almost hypnotic — some clients drift into a light sleep or a meditative state. You might notice subtle popping or clicking sounds as your vertebrae gently adjust, though this technique doesn't involve the sharp manipulations of chiropractic work.
Some people feel emotional responses during treatment. The spine holds considerable tension for many of us, and its gentle release can sometimes bring unexpected tears or a sense of vulnerability. This is entirely normal and often indicates that deeply held stress is being released.
Immediately after the session, you may feel slightly lightheaded when you first sit up — this passes quickly. Many people report feeling taller or more upright, with a sense of space between their vertebrae. The St John's Wort oil leaves your skin feeling soft and may continue to provide a subtle warming sensation for hours afterward.
In the days following treatment, some people experience mild soreness similar to after gentle exercise, as your spine settles into its new alignment. Others feel immediately energised and more mobile.
Post-Session Care
Leave the oil on your skin for at least 4-6 hours after treatment — many practitioners recommend keeping it on overnight if possible. This allows maximum absorption and continues the treatment's benefits. When you do shower, use lukewarm water and avoid vigorous scrubbing of the treated area.
Drink plenty of water in the hours following your session to support your body's natural healing processes. Avoid heavy lifting or strenuous exercise for the rest of the day, allowing your spine time to integrate the work.
Be mindful that St John's Wort can increase photosensitivity, making your skin more susceptible to sunburn. Take extra care with sun exposure for 24-48 hours after treatment, particularly if you have fair skin.
Building Your Treatment Programme
Most practitioners recommend an initial series of 3-5 sessions, typically spaced one to two weeks apart. This allows time for your spine to respond and integrate the changes between treatments whilst maintaining momentum.
The gentle nature of Breuss massage means benefits often accumulate gradually rather than providing dramatic immediate relief. Many people notice improved posture and reduced stiffness after 2-3 sessions, with deeper structural changes becoming apparent over the full course of treatment.
Once you've completed an initial series, monthly maintenance sessions are common, particularly if you have ongoing postural challenges from desk work or other repetitive activities. Some practitioners combine Breuss massage with the Dorn Method (spinal realignment) for a more comprehensive approach to spinal health.
